Chow Chow Curry / Kootu







 Chow chow and channa dhall are good combination.I usually prepare with only yellow moong dhall , i tried using channadhall ,it tasted so delicious.This is the perfect combo for any tamarid gravy(rasam and pulikulambu) and pappad.

Ingredients
  1. Chow Chow -  1 ,peeled & chopped thin and small
  2. Channa dhal - 5tbsp
  3. Yellow moong dhall - 1 tbsp
  4. Greenchilly - 2 ,slit
  5. Garlic - 1 pod
  6. Hing - 1/4 tsp
  7. Coconut grated - 2 tbsp
  8. Salt to taste
Season
  1. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  2. Urad dhall - 1/2 tsp
  3. Onion - 1 -finely chopped 
  4. Red chillies - 1 split
  5. Curry leaves - 5 leaves
  6. Oil - 1 tbsp



Method :
  1. Pressure cook channa dhall and moong dhall with garlic,hing and turmeric powder for 3- 4 whistles.
  2. The Channa dhall should be cooked well .Keep it separate
  3. In a pan add 3/4 cup of water ,chow chow and  slit green chillies and cook till the chow chow is 3/4th cooked.
  4. Add salt and the cooked dhall and mix it well 
  5. Let is boil for another 5min.
  6. Now add the grated coconut and stir it well ,that it mixes with the vegetable
  7. Take it off from heat.
  8. In a separate pan ,prepare for seasoning.
  9. When oil is hot ,add mustard seeds after it splutters ,add urad dhall.let it turn golden brown
  10. Now add the curry leaves , red chillies and saute for a second
  11. Add the onions and fry till it turns golden brown .
  12. Pour it into the top of the chow chow.

Tips :
  • Dont over cook the dhall 
  • Dont overcook the vegetables ,else it wont retain its shape.The vegetables will take 10 min to cook .
  • So you can check after 8 min.
  • When coconut is added ,it should not be cooked more than 2 sec,as the flavour will change completely.
