VenPongal



VenPongal simple , nutritious and delicious meal.This is prepared during Pongal.This can be wholesome meal too with coconut chutney and Sambar.This is kids friendly version as it is not spicy.

Serves : 4
Duration : 20minutes

Ingredients - I

  1. Rice - 1 cup
  2. Yellow split Moong dhall - 3/4 cup
  3. Water - 5.5 cups
  4. Salt as needed
  5. Whole Jeera - 1/4 tsp
  6. Whole Pepper - 1/2 tsp

Season

  1. Ghee - 1 tsp
  2. Whole Jeera - less than 1/4 tsp
  3. Whole Pepper - 1/4 tsp
  4. Curry leaves - 8nos
  5. Cashewnut -5 nos , broken 
  6. Grated Ginger- 1/4 tsp

Method

  1. In a pressure cooker add the washed rice and dhall.
  2. In a pan , heat little oil , add the pepper and jeera from the ingredients list - I.
  3. When the pepper splutters add this to the pressure cooker.
  4. Add salt and water and pressure cook for 3 whistles.Leave it for simmer in 5 minutes.Then switch off.
  5. In a pan , heat the ghee add the ingredients under season ,when the cashew nuts turn golden brown ,add grated ginger and saute for a second top it to the cooked pongal and give it a stir .
  6. Serve hot with coconut chutney and Sambar.

Tips 

  1. Adding more water makes the pongal soft .
  2. You can coarsly powdered pepper and Jeera .
  3. You can add red chilly while seasoning to make it more spicy.
  4. Seasoning in ghee gives good aroma.
  5. If you want more rice and less dhall you can adjust the measurement to your choice.
